shift boot installation guide

1. Let's start with the ebrake boot this time. It's a 5-second job to install it - just pull it over the existing assembly.

2. Remove the two screws on the console between the shifter and the window buttons. Remove the shift knob by turning counter-clockwise. Remove the shift boot by gently squeezing and lifting up and out. The framework is plastic (and 23 years old) so be gentle.

3. Using low heat (like a hair dryer) to warm any glue, gently remove the staples and then the old vinyl boot. Repair or reinforce any breaks in your frame. I had a break in the frame and one broken tab; I used a flat piece of metal (from a hanging file set) cut into strips to fix mine up. Glue on the flat side of the bracket.

4. Insert frame/bracket into boot, pulling tight around the corners. Try to position the seams so that they'll lay flat, it'll make your job easier later. Make sure the double-stitches are on the outside of the frame, with the tabs facing out. Make sure, that the corner of the boot where the stitching is SHORTER faces AWAY from the driver and towards the front of the car.

5. Start glueing the leather down. Keep it as low as possible, and out from under the locking tabs on the bracket/frame. I tried glueing one whole side at once with my little clamps but I found it was better to just go an inch at a time and use my fingers. I used hot-glue. It's probably not the best, but it is easily removed if you need to start over or someone comes up with a better frame. Clean up any glue globules that will interfere with a good fit on the console plate.

6. Reinstall the plastic frame in the center console.

CONGRATULATIONS - YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED YOUR NEW LEATHER BOOTS!

Useful tip

You have installed a product made out of genuine leather. As you know, to maintain a leather product in good condition, you should take care of it. We suggest occasionally (every 4-6 week for example) applying some leather conditioner/UV protector to keep your leather from drying up in the sun and cracking.
