shift boot installation guide

This upgrade applies to 5th Generation 4-Runners with manual shift transfer case (TRD Pro, TRD Off-road, and previously named Trail models).

1. Remove transfer case shift knob, turning counter-clockwise.

Lift edges of trim plate from center console. Use of plastic pry tool is recommended to avoid scratching console or trim plate.

2. Release white plastic wire connector located on the rear, passenger side portion of the trim plate.

3. Carefully lift trim plate over gearshift lever, after lifting the vinyl shift boot off of the transfer case shifter shaft. Check to assure all ten (10) plastic retention clips (yellow) remain with the trim plate.

Gently release vinyl OEM shift boot from the plastic retention tabs on the trim plate. Note that there are six (6) tabs holding the OEM vinyl shift boot in place.

4. Carefully remove the metal staples from the OEM Transfer Case boot. You will need to retain the plastic base for installation of the new leather Transfer Case boot. Take care not to break the plastic base. You can now remove the OEM vinyl boot. Note the orientation of the shift boot base, as the plastic base is asymmetrical in shape (i.e. only fits in one direction).

5. User can secure the leather Transfer Case boot to the plastic base with glue, thread, or wire, as per installer's choice. I chose to use 0.025” (0.635mm) Malin Aircraft Stainless Steel Lockdown wire.

Carefully drill each staple hole (on the plastic base plate) with a 1/16" or smaller drill bit. You will need to reattach the new leather boot to the plastic base using these newly widened drill holes.

6. Corresponding holes were made in the new leather boot using a sharp needle or awl. This allowed the stainless wire to be threaded from plastic base to the leather boot. Note: Each twisted wire corresponds to the location of the previously removed staple. Take care, as these wires are very sharp (gloves recommended during install).

Reinstallation of the new leather covered Transfer Case boot can now be accomplished, similar to the removal of the OEM vinyl boot. Take care to maintain proper orientation of the plastic base plate. Do NOT break any of the six (6) plastic tabs that hold the Transfer Case boot in place on the center console trim plate.

CONGRATULATIONS - YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY INSTALLED YOUR NEW LEATHER BOOTS!

Useful tip

You have installed a product made out of genuine leather. As you know, to maintain a leather product in good condition, you should take care of it. We suggest occasionally (every 4-6 week for example) applying some leather conditioner/UV protector to keep your leather from drying up in the sun and cracking.
